About name#3

So far we have seen the name culture in Japan.
From now on, this will be the main topic of Tenshinryu.
One of the name categories is Kakushina (隠し名 – Secret name).
This means another name to avoid the real name.

This includes Henmei and Hitsumei.

* Henmei (変名 assumed name)
* Hitsumei (筆名 Pen name, Pseudonym)

It is a term that refers to all but the real name, including Go(号) and Azana(字), but is used to hide the real name for some purpose.
(Although Inseimaimei has the same meaning in the first place)

At the beginning of this series, I wrote, “Some Tenshinryu Hyoho have multiple names for one technique.”

For example, Zaho(坐法 – Sitting style) Kodachi(小太刀 short sword) Battojyutsu(抜刀術 drawing a sword technique) has a Kata(勢法 forms in Tenshinryu) called Mazumeryodan(間詰両断).

This is done first Gassyurei(合手礼) and Gassyorei(合掌礼).
Immediately after that, throwing a fan (Hisen-no-Koto) and then jumping and attacking while drawing the sword.

But Tenshinryu does not call it Imina, Mana, Honmyo.
In Tenshinryu, the real name is called “Inamina(諱名)”.

“Inamina(諱名)” is not generally used.
This is a unique name used only by Tenshinryu.

This Mazumeryodan(間詰両断) is the real name(Inamina – 諱名) used inside Tenshinryu.

Ma – distance
zume – approach
ryodan – cutting in two

“(Fly) Approach from a distance and cut the enemy.“ This expresses the movement of the technique as it is.
This makes it easy for outsiders to guess the details of the technique.
Therefore, Kakusina (隠し名 – Secret name) is used as a announcing publicly.
There are multiple Kakushina (隠し名 – Secret name) as follows.

・鵟羽爪 (Nobatsume, Nosurihazume)
The bird Nosuri(Buteo japonicus) is a kind of small hawk.
Nosuri flies very low and catches feed(Mouse etc).
It means “Nosuri(鵟) spreads his wings(羽) and attacks with his claws(爪)”.
The feed here is a throwing fan.
As if you are chasing this thrown fan, you will fly and attack.

・野葉摘 (Nobatsume)
The expression is like picking(摘) the leaves(野葉).
The leaves are weeds.
It means to eliminate harmful things like weeding weeds.

・飛鳥剱 (Hichōken)
It means a flying(飛) bird(鳥) sword(剱).

Hazume and Mazume have similar sounds.
In this way, using Kakushina, it was hidden outside and sometimes inside.

That being said, leaking a name to the outside is a rare case in the first place, and hiding it is a kind of metaphor.
I feel that “use another name to hide the meaning of the technique” is not for all reasons.
If you just want to hide it seriously, it’s more effective not to associate the name with the movement from the beginning.
However, Nobatsume, Nosurihazume, Nobatsume, Hichōken, etc. are all names associated with the meaning of the technique.
I think that these are the meanings of multiple names that “the technique and the image are matched, and care was taken not to lose the true meaning”.

Tenshinryu has not only a huge number of techniques, but also a large number of techniques with multiple names.
Martial arts is not a memorization issue, it is more important to be able to fight in real battles than to remember names.
8th Shike Isihi Sensei said. “If you can use it, it’s real”.
In modern times, this may not be necessary, but Tenshinryu still demands practicality.
This is because we and the people of the future do not find value in just a procedure that is not practical.

At the same time, however, the pursuit of its cultural character is an important factor in order not to lose its added value.

Since the name of the technique may contain the deep meaning of the technique, it is also important in terms of polishing the technique.
And in the sense that it also includes thoughts in ancient martial arts, it is very valuable culturally.

Tenshinryu makes courses and catalogs of techniques to learn without relying on memorization, but if you know the cultural value and realize the fun of learning it, you can remember it yourself.

■「隠し名」について

これまで、日本における名前文化について見てきました。
天心流としてはここからが本題となります。

名前におけるカテゴリの一つに隠し名（かくしな）というものがあります。

これは本名を避けて使う別の名前を意味します。
変名・筆名などが該当します。
号や字など含めて、本名以外の全般を指す言葉ですが、何らかの意図をもって本当の名前を隠す場合に用います。
（もっともそもそも隠姓埋名という文化自体が該当する行為になるのですが）

このシリーズの冒頭に　「天心流兵法では一つの技に複数の名を持たせているものがあります。」と記しました。

譬えば坐法小太刀抜刀術（坐抜）では間詰両断（まづめりょうだん）という勢法があります。
合手礼や合掌礼を行い、飛扇の事（扇子を飛ばす）から抜刀しつつ飛びかかり、切りつける技法です。

「諱名」というのは一般用語としては用いられている例がなく、天心流独自で用いていると思われる名称です。

この間詰両断が流儀内で用いられる本当の名前になります。
「飛んで間を詰めて両断する」と名が体を表しています。

しかし表に対してはこれでは技の内容が推察されかねないため、公称としては隠し名を用いています。
隠し名は下記のように複数あります。

　鵟羽爪（のばつめ、のすりはづめ）
野葉摘（のばつめ）
飛鳥剱（ひちょうけん）

鵟という鳥は、小さな鷹の一種です。
非常に低空を飛び、餌を捕まえる姿から、「鵟が羽を広げて爪にて襲いかかる」という程の意味を含めて　鵟羽爪（のばつめ、のすりはづめ）などと称します。
餌は自ら投げた扇子です。
この飛ばした扇子を追いかけるかのように、低空で滑空し切り込みます。

また野の葉を摘むようにという表現では野葉摘（のばつめ）とも呼びます。

そして飛ぶ鳥の剣として　飛鳥剱（ひちょうけん）とも呼びます。

「はづめ」「はつめ」と「間詰め」は当て字ともなっています。
このようにして隠し名を用いて、外部、或いは場合によっては内部にまで様々に秘したのです。

とは言っても、外部に名を漏らす事自体が、そもそもレアケースですし、隠すというのは、一種の比喩とも言えます。
わざわざ変名を用いる理由としては、隠すためでは不十分と感じます。
これは私の推測であるが、やはり一つの技を、様々な名称を付す事で、それぞれの意味を託したのではないかと思います。
本気でただ隠すだけなら、動きと名前を関係させない方が効果的です。
しかし　鵟羽爪、野葉摘、飛鳥剱など、いずれも技法の意味と関連付けた名称になっています。
そうする事で、技法とイメージを一致させ、その真義を見失わないように注意したというのも、複数の名を持つ意味なのだと考えられます。

天心流は、技の数が膨大なだけでなく、その複数の名称があるものも相当数になります。
武術は暗記問題ではなく、喩え名前を覚えなくても、先代が言っていたように実際に「使えれば本物」です。
そしてもはや本義という意味では必要なくなった伝統武術ですが、天心流では実戦性を徹底的に要求します。

しかし同時にその文化性の追求も、その付加価値を失わないために重要なファクターとなっています。

技法の名称が技の深い意味を内包する事もあるために、技法を磨くという意味でも重要ですし、古伝の武術における思想も含むという意味では、文化的にも大変貴重なものとなるのです。

天心流では暗記に頼らず流儀を学ぶため、科目、技法目録の類を製作していますが、文化的な価値を知り、それを学ぶ楽しさに気づく事が出来れば、自身で覚えていく事も一つの楽しみになるのではないかと思う次第です。
