No.21 Niji no Tachikake

This technique is a 変形抜 (henkeinuki) and acts as a counterpart to 天元貫 (tengen’nuki).

It’s especially useful for 詰天 (tsumeten – a situation where you have a ceiling, a tree branch or other obstacles above your head).

Hello, everyone on TENSHINRYU ONLINE! My name is 連彩 (Rensai) and this time I’ll be in charge of instructing you for the first time. Please treat me well.

The technique we’re going to look at this time is 虹の太刀掛 (niji no tachikake).

Niji no Tachikake is a technique especially used in places with a low ceiling. We call a place with a ceiling this low 詰天 (tsumeten). Since in a place with such a low ceiling attacking the opponent from above is simply unthinkable, this is a technique where we stab the opponent unexpectedly without assuming a defensive stance.

So, let’s now actually try to use the technique that is called 虹の太刀掛 (niji no tachikake).

Place your hand on the tsuka. While doing so, pull back the left side of your body a little bit and as you take Hanmi do the battou.

First, pull back the saya, then do the battou. Once you’ve drawn the sword from the saya, turn around your right wrist. Then move your right hand up.

While bringing out your right foot to the front, move your left hand to the tsukagashira and stab.

At this time, lower the kissaki and let it dangle a bit. Let’s be careful not to lower our right hand to much, though. We should be aiming at around the opponent’s top of the shoulders.

After stabbing, we’ll add in a 二之太刀 (ni no tachi). As the ニ之太刀 (ni no tachi), or second attack, we flip over the sword and pull to cut. After cutting, we return to Seigan. I’ll leave out the explanation for the noutou.

So, next I’ll go from the side.

First, do the battou. While pulling back the left side of your body, pull back the saya.

After drawing the sword, turn around your right wrist and let the blade face upwards.

Put your left hand on the tsukigashira and thrust to the front.

Here, your right wrist might have a tendency to turn over to the inside, so please keep it on the outside and thrust.

Then, so as not to get your right elbow blocked, let’s make sure to thrust properly all the way to the front.

For the 二之太刀 (ni no tachi), strike your right wrist with your left hand as you pull and cut.

Otherwise you may also just grip the tsukagashira with your left hand and pull and cut just like that.

Then we back off by usually six shaku (about 180 cm). Then we do the noutou.

Well then, let’s have a look at an actual situation where this is used.

My opponent is about to draw his sword. In correspondence to that, I draw my own sword.

I’m aiming at around below his right collarbone. The 二之太刀 (ni no tachi) depends on the situation, but I’ll go for his shoulder.

There are also situations where you would stab the arm. Where you stab depends on the situation.

Let’s have a look at some thing to take not of that tend to happen a lot.

One thing is, since we perform this at a place with a low ceiling or 詰天 (tsumeten), during the noutou you have to draw your sword without letting the kissaki spring up high.

When drawing, keep it low so the kissaki wouldn’t go up too far.

Another thing is that you might end up splitting up the movement into two.

Make sure to not split up the movement of drawing and stabbing into two.

You may also do it slowly, so please make sure to perform the drawing and stabbing in one movement.

And this concludes the instructions for 虹の太刀掛 (niji no tachikake).

虹の太刀掛 (niji no tachikake) is an especially characteristic technique within Tenshinryuu as well.

特に詰天（頭上に天井、枝など障害物がある状況）にて有用となります。

TENSHINRYU ONLINEの皆さん、こんにちは。今回初めて指導を担当させていただきます連彩（れんさい）と申します。よろしくお願いいたします。

今回指導致します技法は「虹の太刀掛（にじのたちかけ）」になります。

虹の太刀掛とは、特に天井が低い場所で用いる技法になります。このような天井が低い場所を「詰天（つめてん）」と呼びます。このように天井が低い場所では、相手はまさか上から攻撃をされるとは思わないため、防御の姿勢が取れていない相手の意表を突く技法となります。

では実際に虹の太刀掛という技法をやってみましょう。

柄に手を掛けます。この時、若干身体の左側を引いて半身を取りながら抜刀していきます。

まずは鞘を引いていき、抜刀します。刀が鞘から抜けたら、右手首を

返します。そして右手を上の方にもっていきます。

右足で前に出ながら、左手を柄頭にもっていき、突きます。

この時、切っ先は少し下に垂れ下がるような形になります。右手が下がり過ぎないように気を付けましょう。狙う場所は相手の肩口の辺りです。

突いた後、二之太刀を入れます。ニ之太刀は刀を返して、引き切ります。切った後、青眼の位を取ります。納刀の解説は省略します。

では次は横から行きます。

まず抜刀します。身体の左側を引きながら、鞘を引いていきます。

刀が抜けた後、右手首を返し、刃を上に向けます。

左手を柄頭に付けて、前を突きます。

この時、右手首が内側に回りがちなので、右手首は外側に、そして右手首を生かして、突いて下さい。

そして、なるべく右肘が詰まらないように、大きく前を突くようにしましょう。

二之太刀は左手で右手首を叩くようにして引き切ります。

もしくは、柄頭をそのまま左手で掴んで引き切っても構いません。

通常は六尺（約180cm）下がります。下がった所で納刀します。

それでは実際のシチュエーションを見ていきましょう。

相手が刀を抜こうとします。こちらはそれに対応して刀を抜きます。

狙う位置は、相手の右鎖骨の下辺りです。二之太刀は状況によりますが、相手の肩を引き切ります。

このように、腕を突く場合もあります。突く場所は状況によって変わります。

良くある注意点を見ていきましょう。

一つは、天井の低い詰天（つめてん）の場所で行いますので、抜刀したときに切っ先が高く跳ねないように刀を抜いていきます。

抜くときは切っ先が上がらないように低くします。

もう一つの注意点は、動作が二つに分かれてしまうことです。

抜き、突く、と動作が二拍に分かれてしまわないようにします。

ゆっくりで構いませんので、抜き、突く、というように一拍の動作で行うようにして下さい。

以上で、虹の太刀掛の指導を終わります。

虹の太刀掛は天心流の中でも特に特徴的な技法となっています。
